The True Cost of a Phone Case: Why DEVIA Puts Sustainability at the Heart of Design

Mar 30, 2026

A friend once asked me, "Why are your phone cases so expensive?"

I smiled and, instead of answering directly, asked him: "What happens to your old phone case after you're done with it?"

He paused for a moment and said, "I guess... I just throw it away."

Exactly. Thrown away. But then what? It might lie buried in the soil for centuries, or drift into the ocean.

This isn't a moral judgment. It is a reality that every product manufacturer must face.

2007: We Didn't Think Much of It

2007: We Didn't Think Much of It

DEVIA was founded in 2007. Back then, the first iPhone had just been released, and the world was immersed in the excitement of "finally having a phone that can browse the internet."

We were, too. At that time, our focus was simple: how to make the case thinner, a better fit, and more comfortable to hold. Environmental sustainability? Honestly, no one in the industry was mentioning that word at the time.

But after more than a decade of being in the industry, things started to change.

When we looked back through our warehouse at the products designed in those early years, some had already turned yellow. They were once carefully placed in packaging boxes, shipped across oceans, held in people's hands, and then, one day, removed and tossed into the trash without a second thought.

In that moment, I realized: every item we create doesn't truly disappear.

Not a Trend, But a Choice

In recent years, "sustainability" has become a buzzword. Brands scramble to declare they use biodegradable materials or recycled plastics, as if simply slapping on this label entitles them to charge a premium.

But that is not what we want.

DEVIA does not use sustainable materials because it is trendy. It is because, after 19 years in the accessory business, we know better than anyone else: this industry generates far too much waste.

Every year, hundreds of millions of phone cases are produced, consumed, and discarded globally. Most are made from ordinary plastic. Are they durable? Yes. But precisely because they are durable, they remain "durable" on our planet long after being thrown away.

We cannot stop everyone from changing their phone cases, but we can at least ensure that when you are done with them, the impact on the Earth is a little smaller—just a little.

Sustainable Materials are Actually Harder to Work With

Many people think that using sustainable materials is a "downgrade"—that because the material is biodegradable, it doesn't matter if the quality is worse.

On the contrary.

If you have used the DEVIA sustainable series, you will notice: its feel, hardness, and anti-yellowing capability are virtually no different from conventional materials. In fact, we put even more effort into some details.

Why? Because we don't want you to compromise your user experience for the sake of "sustainability." If a case is unpleasant to use because it is sustainable, it will be thrown away faster—isn't that counterproductive?

2007: We Didn't Think Much of It

To achieve this, our R&D team repeatedly fine-tuned our material formulas. Recycled materials, biodegradable materials... every time we introduced a new material, it meant re-testing for drop protection, wear resistance, and the fit with the phone.

Sometimes, adjusting a single formula takes half a year.

Some ask if it's worth it. We think it is. Because true sustainability is not just about slapping on a label; it is about making environmental protection something that doesn't require you to sacrifice anything.

Sustainability is More Than Just Materials

At DEVIA, our understanding of sustainable design goes beyond just the "materials used."

It is reflected in our packaging—we continuously optimize packaging structures to reduce unnecessary films and fillers. It is reflected in our supply chain—we integrate upstream and downstream resources to minimize repetitive packaging and carbon emissions during transportation. It is reflected in the product lifecycle—every case we design is made to "stay with you" longer, rather than becoming a fast-moving consumer good.

Great Design Adapts to the Product and the World

To us, sustainability has never been a slogan; it is a principle that runs through our entire chain of R&D, production, and output.

From strictly screening sustainable raw materials and refusing harmful chemicals, to optimizing processes during production to reduce energy consumption and waste; from balancing durability and aesthetics in product design to reduce the waste caused by frequent replacements—we have integrated sustainability into every detail of every DEVIA phone case.

We have been making Apple accessories for 19 years, protecting the beloved devices of countless fans and witnessing countless changes in the industry. But what has never changed is: we remain steadfast in our original intention in product creation and shoulder our responsibilities as a brand. A good phone case should not only protect your phone, but also uphold a commitment to the environment. This is DEVIA's sustainable design philosophy.
